Team Effectiveness Surveys

An increasing number of Beacons clients use our team effectiveness surveys as a means of taking stock.

As a licensed user of 20/20 Insight GOLD's incredibly versatile and comprehensive feedback software, we are able to draw upon a vast database of questions not only to tailor the survey to meet the client's exact needs for information and feedback, but also to conduct the whole process on-line.

The survey may be just among the team members themselves, or extend to customers, suppliers, colleagues - i.e. anyone with insight or evidence about the team's performance.

Examples

Firstly, this is our most simple and most often used survey.

  • What in your words are the aims and objectives of the team?
  • How well in your view is the team doing?
  • Write down one thing the team should keep doing
  • Write down one thing the team should stop doing
  • Write down one thing the team should start doing

Secondly, this is a more comprehensive survey that we designed and have used many times, in which we ask team members, "How satisfied are you that the team performs these actions well ? :

dissatisfied > satisfied
1. We all share a vision - a clear understanding of the "big picture" or strategy 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
2. Work is assigned, delegated and clarified thoroughly 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
3. We "deliver" on time and to the standard required. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
4. We have effective and task-focused meetings. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
5. We all understand the team's strategy and goals. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
6. We understand each other's strengths and weaknesses. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
7. We actively listen to and encourage contributions from everyone. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
8. We quickly resolve disagreements within the team. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
9. We make good use of the skills and best practices available to us within the team. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
10. The manager uses a range of appropriate management styles to empower the team. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
11. We challenge ideas or established practice when we see a better way. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
12. We respond positively to change. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
13. We act on feedback and suggestions from our customers. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?
14. We learn from other teams. 1 2 3 4 5 6 ?

How we use the survey

  • The numeric responses from all the team members, and other "raters" if included in the survey, are reproduced to show both the average score per item and the distribution of scores.
  • Importantly, the survey also includes the capacity for comments after every question. The software collates these comments and reproduces them verbatim, but anonymously, in a report.

Team Development Workshops

We present and discuss the report with the team during a team development workshop. The feedback is used to set the agenda for the workshop, to address and work on priorities, and also to generate further action plans.
