Leadership in Action

Leadership in Action is a practical, workshop-style course with an outdoor element. It is ideal for practicing managers and potential managers who wish to develop their leadership skills and improve their understanding of their own skills and potential, in a different and rewarding environment.

The Beacons Leadership in Action course has a record of success stretching back to 1981, and incorporates the successful situational leadership model.

It runs as both an open programme and an in-company programme.

Beacons "open" Leadership in Action Course

The "open" Leadership in Action Course is a 3-day residential programme, where a group of between 6 and 10 people from different organisations and backgrounds work with us to share experiences and learn together.

2008 Programmes:

  • June 24th-26th
  • Further dates to be announced

The venue is the Speech House, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire.

The course objectives

  • Understand and experience the difference between leadership and management
  • Experience the impact of different leadership styles on self and others
  • Lead teams through creative activities and simulations
  • Practice effective communication of one's message as a leader
  • Receive feedback on one's own personal impact as a leader
  • Explore different influencing styles as a leader and in non leadership roles
  • Assess one's team preferred team role, and understand how it differs from other people's

Who will benefit?

Managers, team leaders, supervisors, and potential managers, with some work experience, and of any age.

In terms of learning styles, there is something for everyone - in other words, people who learn best from activity and involvement, from reflecting and discussing, from developing theories and models of best practice, and from practicing new techniques - all are catered for in this rich and productive learning environment.

Course contents

  • pre-course personal objective setting
  • situational leadership - leadership styles
  • developing teams - different team roles
  • the systematic approach to decision making
  • project planning and "milestoning"
  • creative problem solving
  • personal action plans
  • post-course personal review

Linking the course to work

Before each course, the Beacons Course Leader visits all course members, and their managers, to plan ahead by setting specific objectives.

During the course, all reviews and discussions centre around applying the learning back at work - how leadership can be applied and make a difference at all levels and in every part of an organisation.

Three to six months afterwards, we attend a further meeting to discuss progress on the Action Plan, to review the course in detail, and generally to ensure that the course has met its objectives and that our customer has had value for money.

Testimonials

  • "It verified what I have known about myself, and now I have learnt some new skills" - Recruitment Agency Branch Manager.
  • "The feedback was excellent and the facilitator encouraged it to be well balanced" - Credit Control Manager
  • "The feedback sessions really helped me to recognise what was good and what could be done differently" - Distribution Company Team Leader
  • "Aled was an excellent tutor, very knowledgeable, very good at bringing people out of their shells, and treated us all at the right level. He explained the models with great enthusiasm and clarity" - TV Executive
In-company Leadership in Action Courses

You may have sufficient numbers of candidates to book a dedicated course, and also see the advantages of a tailored in-company course outweighing the cross-fertilisation and greater freedom associated with your people attending the open programme.

In which case we would work with you to design a course where the venue, duration and content reflected the precise learning objectives of your group.

Please contact us to discuss your requirements.
